Whenever people are on the receiving end of a transgression, they frequently recognize sins that they otherwise suppress. What they hide as offenders they shout as the offended. They even feel offended. Their integrity is suddenly injured, and they sound the same to all. It is proper to recognize such as a proud and hypocritical reaction in men, but we must also admit that it is an inevitable one—an echo that we all actually expect and long for at least a kind of righteous world, even when we wickedly try and place ourselves as its center.

Reading Genesis

Unbelief & reading scripture

I find that I read Genesis 3 somewhat differently than I do its two preceding chapters. There is nothing substantially different about the third chapter; it is only that, from that point on, scripture records people so much like me. This is not true of the second chapter. And this means I must read carefully.

A Supernatural Society

The church is more than a civic institution

Some states eased virus restrictions last week. Christians were then free to practice an under-appreciated virtue of habit. They returned to churches. For some, it was but a short walk to a well-worn chapel. Others needed to travel farther. They all came from somewhere else, but these all traveled to a church last Sunday.
