Hedonists everywhere should be concerned; after all, lust is what it has always been. Even when it is attended by pleasure, lust remains ungratified and ungratifying. This will surprise no one, but it does seem to bother some. Otherwise, there would not be such a rush to exalt lust as love, or to confuse their rewards.

Matthew 19 reminds us that better questions often obtain better answers; but it more strikingly reminds us that the character of a question is first found in the integrity of a man’s heart. In the end, an inquirer’s ignorance is not nearly as damning as his unbelieving disposition.

This is why it is never sufficient to speak of Egypt in the shallowest aspects of its typology, as if its contrast to Israel were merely ethical—or that ethics can be separated from God’s revelation of himself. If the distinction between Egypt and Canaan were confined to the realm of ethics and culture, Egypt could have sufficed as the resting place of the Hebrews.

The Christian is not merely one who strives to be what he ought to be, but he strives to act as he already is. And he is what he is because of who is Savior is, the Son of God. Consequently then, believers also possess their rightful title as sons of God. Happily, the believer’s present identity will eventually unfold into a future and fuller expression of this fact, whenever the Savior appears.
