What Israel’s Exodus tells us about redemption

If Israel would be delivered from Egypt at all, it would be at God’s initiative. Israel’s new life, then, must wholly subsist in the kind and quality of life that God gave Israel through his intervention on Israel’s behalf and, after the fact, no other definition of life could exist for her.

Conceiving a Fiction

Paul asks his readers to imagine the circumstances were the Christian account actually mistaken

As others have remarked before, this is an extraordinary argument. Paul, in fact, asks his reader to conceive of the resurrection’s fact as if it were a fiction. This is an uncommon kind of argument, for it gives up the ground upon which so much rhetoric is finally made to depend—the strong, emotional sentiments that are sometimes made to stand in the absence (or refusal) of facts.
